In essence, virtual production is where the physical and the digital meet. The term covers a wide range of computer-aided production and visualization tools and techniques to compose, capture and manipulate perfect scenes by mixing physical and augmented reality.
How it works?
The virtual scenario is the sum of large LED panels plus the management of the 3D scenario in a game programming platform (in this case, the Unreal Engine), which with the addition of tracking sensors (from virtual reality technology) installed in the camera, allow the images on the LED panels to be adjusted in real time to suit the change in the camera's parallax. That is, the perspective of the displayed image changes to match the movement of the camera.
Creative Freedom
The use of these LED volumes promotes an immersion of the actors and the team in the scene, reducing the time and especially the need for post-production. All effects, graphics and animations are created before filming, which means that producers and actors can view a scene almost finished during filming or as soon as they finish the set, providing a greater level of creative freedom to everyone involved and reducing the production time and costs.
Benefits for your production
The virtual scenario strengthens the creative process and facilitates the work of professionals, such as photography and art, in a set. The director of photography can play a unique role in the development of virtual scenarios, essentially illuminating and deciding the position of the light in the virtual scene, as in what will be done on the set, in real time during production, immediately visualizing the final result of the composition. The art director has artistic freedom to create, being able to view the result in real time during filming and, if necessary, request changes that can be made quickly. The system's workflow allows for the possibility of adjustments, according to the team's needs, the sun, reflections and elements of the scenery itself can be moved, all in a very short time.
More productivity for the set
The virtual scenario is perfect for increasing productivity in film production. First, by allowing a reduced crew in set. Second, by using LED panels, which are great light emitters, there is an economy in the investment of light rental outside the realism that the panels allow in terms of luminance. It also saves on logistics since it is possible to create internal and external scenarios of complex locations, which are usually expensive or limited, without worrying about having to find the location or even if it is in a distant place, from the hours of light in certain locations, noise problems, restricted access, among others.
Security for your project and team
The use of the virtual scenario comes as a great facilitator in the implementation of the security measures that allow the productions to work with more security and speed than the traditional filming in locations. When recreating in studio the possibility of different scenarios (internal or external), we focus on working in a controlled environment that makes it easy to implement new safety rules such as: frequent cleaning of areas and equipment, limited shooting hours and the creation of zones that separate actors and staff who can't socially distance or wear masks as part of their job.
